Attractions from Brisbane to Darwin
Have you ever wanted to drive to Darwin? It’s something we do every week, so we’d like to share with you some of the highlights of the drive. Of course, we can’t stop to sightsee, but we can point out some attractions that you could be lucky enough to see.
Nitmiluk National Park
You can access the Nitmiluk National Park gorge by travelling 30km east of Katherine on Gorge Rd. There is signage to help you find it. If you want to head to Edith Falls, travel 40km north of Katherine on the Stuart Highway. You’ll find the park entry 20kms down Edith Falls Road.
The Katherine gorge is known for its beauty and breathtaking size. It is located on the land of the Jawoyn people, and their ancient art can be seen on rocks throughout the park.
Visit the Nitmiluk centre for information on these ancient people. Boat cruises of the first few gorges are available. We recommend taking a sunset or sunrise cruise to witness the beauty of the changing light. Canoe hire is available too. Some fishing is available in the Katherine River, but not in the gorge itself.
There are plenty of trails to explore and waterfalls to witness. There are also helicopter tours available.
Edith Falls (Leliyn)
We recommend visiting Edith Falls. There you can enjoy a swim in the tranquil natural environment. If you have enough time, you can take a swim in the isolated Sweetwater Pool. It may take more than one day to get there, and if you’re planning on staying overnight you’ll need a permit.
Activities
You can camp in the park. Near the gorge caravan park, powered and unpowered camping sites are available. Only unpowered sites are available at Edith Falls. One does not need to book to camp at Edith Falls, so the best time to secure a spot is around 10am when other campers must vacate.
