Regular Freight Movement Report Proposed by the NTC

National Transport Commission

A five-yearly transport investment and planning report has been proposed by the National Transport Commission (NTC), as discussed in its “Who moves what where: Better informing transport planning for Australians” paper.

The NTC is seeking input for its final recommendations list from government, and transport consumers and operators.

Quantitative data that will help advise future policy development and planning for the transport sector (including port movement information) will be provided by NTC’s proposed Who Moves What Where report.

Who Moves What Where Report

Paul Retter, the NTC chief executive, says the report will make it easier to identify transport trends in a timely and regular manner. This was emphasised in last year’s Who Moves What Where information paper.

According to Retter, “Publishing a regular report on passenger and freight movement trends would help industry, governments and local communities plan for the future”.

He also said: “If we are able to use the knowledge and power of even more big data sets and better analytics, we can produce detailed reports that identify national trends and the likely impact those trends will have on the transport systems and associated infrastructure routes we use every day.
Australia needs to have the best information to make the best investments in transport infrastructure, from large-scale projects to the location of bus stops.”

The proposed report is also seeking to ascertain long-term information and statistical priorities via data collections, which will assist in measuring transport productivity.

NTC is seeking to collaborate with other government agencies to discover “innovative ways to encourage the Australian community’s use of relevant open data sets in the future”.

NTC’s final recommendations will be given to the government in November.

Any individual or organisation can make their own submissions to NTC before 5pm on the 10th of March.
