Travel Therapy
Anyone who’s done a long-distance drive will be aware of the calming qualities of over-land travel. Our drivers get to experience Australia’s glory first hand every day.
Leaving the City
Every trip from Brisbane to Darwin starts with the trip out of the city. Leaving Brisbane, the marks of civilisation recede into patches of forest and then expanses of farmland.
Distant farmhouses can be seen, their yards maintained in pristine condition. Little squares of perfectly mowed lawn can be seen, cut into the wider pastures. Fruit trees can be seen in the yards, with rusty water tanks and the occasional old car on blocks.
Herds of cattle lazily graze on the green grass, their calves excitedly running to and fro, chasing each other along the fence lines. Occasionally a hawk or eagle can be seen slowly circling far above in the sky, looking for its next meal.
Crows commonly stalk the edge of the road, pecking at road kill, and nimbly hopping out of the way of oncoming cars.
True Country
After Toowoomba, the road stretches for miles between expanses of crops and pastures. The green grass gradually changes its hue to khaki or brown as the air becomes drier and the temperature rises.
The occasional windmill or irrigator can be seen. The irrigator pumps water high into the air, nourishing the crops destined for the city.
Small towns pass by, each one becoming smaller, looking like they haven’t changed in 50 years. As the light fades, kangaroos congregate at the edge of the road, creating a dangerous hazard to the passing cars.
Desert
After a time, the fields give way to arid expanses of dirt and sand, punctuated by some struggling gum trees, then later cactus and other dry-climate plants. The colours become predominantly brown and orange, with the harsh sun beating down from the deep blue sky.
Every journey through the country is a breathtaking story of nature and civilisation, and an experience for all the senses.
